Ohanaeze Ndi-Igbo slams Senate for rejecting restructuring, devolution of power.

The Ohanaeze Ndi-Igbo warned the Senate to be know that any of its actions that did not meet the yearnings of the people was an exercise in futility

The leadership of the Ohanaeze Ndi-Igbo has fired some shots at the Nigerian Senate for rejecting restructuring of the country as well as devolution of some powers to states as were being yearned for.
The apex body of the Igbo people in the country expressed disappointment in the Senate and reminded the legislative body that any of its actions that did not meet the aspirations of the people amounted to nullity.
In a statement made available by naija news on Thursday, July 27, the group noted that the National Assembly is not final step in the constitutional amendment process as there were others to make inputs.
In the statement signed by its president-general, Chief John Nnia Nwodo, said it was disappointing and disheartening that as representatives of the people, the legislatures are unable to correctly gauge the mood and desires of their people and the nation.
“The barrage of voices in this country lately shows clearly that majority of Nigerians are desirous of the country running a true federal system and one expected the NASS to have appreciated this in all their actions especially in constitutional amendment,” the statement said.
It also counseled the National Assembly that rather than go into constitutional amendment at this time that the mood of the country is tuned towards total restructuring, the lawmakers should have concerned themselves in making the necessary legislative enactment to empower the convening of a national conference for real constitutional drafting.
“Any action whether legislative or executive in this country today that is not programmed to respond to the yearnings of the populace will amount to excise in futility.
“Ohanaeze therefore urges the National Assembly and other legislative levels involved in the constitutional amendment in the country to put the interest of the country first and ensure that its actions are such that would help to douse the tension and stabilize of the country,” the statement said urging the Senate to also consider the 2014 Confab report.
Philipconcept Blog's gathered that Naija news media had reported that Nigeria's eight Senate was voting on 33 major amendments to the Nigerian constitution.
They voted to give financial autonomy for local governments.
